Glass balustrades create a bright contemporary feel, can add an additional touch of elegance as well creating a stunning focal point in the home. A glass balustrade is incredibly safe, can maximise views, enhance natural lighting and give the illusion of space and depth to an area which could otherwise feel crowded or claustrophobic. It’s also eco-friendly and extremely versatile in terms of design.
The stair design industry has certainly seen an increase in the use of glass as a balustrade option. This isn’t just a mere coincidence. At Signature Stairs we offer a wide range of glass balustrades providing a striking contemporary finish to any staircase structure. Here we look at some of the reasons why glass balustrades are becoming an increasingly popular trend.

Light – Let There Be Light
Increasingly people are incorporating a glass balustrade into their staircase design to make the most of natural lighting. A glass balustrade maximises natural light, creates an open and airy feeling while channelled light through the home to areas previously in shadow.
Space – The Final Frontier
A glass balustrade, once installed, can make a living space feel bigger. Also the mild reflection that comes from the glass can give the illusion of additional space & depth.
Versatile – Design Wise
Glass is extremely versatile and can very easily be combined with a variety of materials including stainless steel and high grade natural timber to give the desired end result. A variety of finishes & fixing options can be achieved depending on the individual project requirements. Curved & frosted glass balustrades are also available and some of our fixing options include mirror finish stainless steel fixings as well as fully concealed channels.
Safety First
If you have any safety concerns about using glass as a balustrade, worry not! All our glass balustrades are incredibly durable and safe, made from toughened glass (laminated when required), and adhere to all BS regulations. In the very unlikely event there is a breakage, toughened glass will break into relatively harmless granule type pieces while laminated glass when broken stays adhered to the other pane of glass as they are joined using an extremely strong interlayer.

Signature Stairs Glass
As mentioned all our glass is toughened safety glass and numerous combinations of laminated safety glass options are also available if required. The optimum is chosen based on client preference, building regulations & site environment. All our clear toughened glass panels are finished with polished edges. In many instances the glass is also heat soaked at high temperatures to remove impurities. Clients may also choose a low-iron glass which is a clear glass that does not have the usual ‘green tint’ to it.
Cleaning Glass Balustrades – Easy Tips To Keep Your Glass Balustrade Dazzling
A glass balustrade is really easy to maintain. If the glass is scratched it can easily be restored. To get rid of any stains or dirt simply use warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth – this should suffice to get any dirt and fingerprints off and remember to always clean top to bottom. Use clean water and a soft cloth to rinse and you can finish by wiping streak free with a dry soft cloth. We advise that you don’t use any abrasive products or harsh chemicals on the glass.
