The most desirable stairs in the Signature range, the Cantilever glass stairs provides an immediate, simple but stunningly elegant impression. The floating staircase requires clever structural design to ensure they are a solid functioning & lasting glass staircase as well as a beautiful feature. Signature Stairs have become somewhat of specialists in cantilever stairs construction over the years no matter what the build – ‘new’ or ‘renovation’ even ‘timber frame’.
With a little planning, the Signatures Stairs cantilever glass staircase can be incorporated in most structures including renovations, or in this case, a timber frame construction. Provisions have to be made to ensure the cantilever stairs receives adequate grounds but at early planning stages there should be little or no cost for this and the results can be spectacular. Signature Stairs are happy to give advice no matter what the project or stage of build so contact us today for a quote.
The more technical term for floating stairs is ‘cantilevered’ steps. Usually our cantilever stairs gain some structural support from the wall side of the stairs but in this project that was not possible for half the structure. Here we merged two fitting solutions to ensure the entire stairs has the cantilever stairs effect. Combining the floating staircase, open steps with a glass balustrade fills this hall with light and a sense of space as well being a dramatic feature.
As simplistic as the cantilever stairs looks it is the structure that you cannot see which enables this eye-catching finish. The metal structure that surrounds the stairs is typically installed at the early stage of a build once the house is waterproofed but before plastering. Once this structure has been hidden behind plasterboard or stone cladding our team then return and clad the steps and add the glass balustrades.
Over the years Signature Stairs have perfected a number of installation methods which enable our cantilever glass staircase design to be fitted no matter the build environment. In this project there were four cantilever stairs sections, each with a different installation method but all with the same solid underfoot feeling which we insist all our glass staircases possess (one of the many details which differentiates us from other stairs suppliers).
Visitors to your home will naturally be drawn to the graceful nature of the cantilever stairs and its elegant design. The benefits of the cantilever stairs do not end there, equally as impressive is the great sense of luxury and openness the stairs can provide while giving the illusion of more space and light. The cantilever stairs opens out an area which could otherwise be narrowed by a conventional, closed rise, solid balustrade stairs.
The floating staircase nature of the steps of a cantilever stairs requires that the glass balustrade matches the design intent of openness and light. Our glass balustrades perfectly compliment the main structure of the stairs. Finishing options on the glass balustrade vary from decorative stainless fixing as above or matching timber blocks to the outside of the glass to give the appearance the glass balustrade is sliced into the step.
Signature Stairs offer a wide range of glass balustrade and handrail options for the cantilever stairs. Most commonly a frameless glass balustrade is fitted but the cantilever stairs can take any of our many stainless steel and glass balustrade and guard railing options. All glass balustrades can be finished with either rebated solid timber handrails of a timber type of your choice or ‘round or square stainless’ options depending how you want the glass staircase to fit in the overall design scheme of the home.
This beautifully finished Signature Cantilever stairs illustrates the attention to detail in fabrication of each Signature product. The frameless glass balustrade appears to slice into solid timber steps with no visible fixing details while the rebated handrail appears to float on top of the clear toughened safety glass balustrade.
The Signature Stairs ‘Cantilever’ or ‘floating staircase / glass staircase’ is an exceptional combination of structural engineering and a stunning visual. Steps that appear to float from the wall and finished with glass balustrade it exudes openness and luxury.
While the steps of the cantilever stairs appear to simply float from the wall it is concealed work behind the wall that enables this simple but striking ‘floating staircase’ effect. With over 20 years’ experience Signature Stairs have devised a multitude of structural solutions to enable the cantilever glass staircase to be installed, no matter what the building environment: ‘new builds, renovations, or timber frame’. Planning is the key, so the earlier you consult our Signature Stairs team on your project the better.
We pride ourselves in the fact our attention to detail and strict standards differentiate us from other suppliers and this is particularly true for the Cantilever stairs. Our minimal deflection rates ensure our cantilever stairs feels solid to walk and are robust enough to last lifetimes. They are fully compliant to UK building and safety regulations so you’ll have total peace of mind.
The majority of our Cantilever stairs are finished with the eye-catching frameless glass balustrade but as the floating staircase steps are so solid they can be matched with any of the Signature glass stair balustrade range. Clients are free to choose from a wide range of timber options. Steps are fabricated from 20 mm solid timber top, front and back with a veneer underside. Our floating stairs may also be finished with a choice of stainless steel or timber blocks to the outside of the step.
